    A Word from Pastor

    Because He Said So!

When it comes to how people view the world, there are several approaches.  The one that is in the lead is the approach which puts the focus on our individual abilities and efforts.  We can call this the “ME” worldview.  This way of viewing reality is primary because everything in life suggests, you reap what you sow, and you lay in the bed you make!  If you work hard you will succeed, if you are lazy you will not.  If you are a good person, good things will happen to you, if you are selfish or evil, you will have earned the evil you receive.  When this worldview is translated into Christianity, (as it has in many Christian churches) it becomes a works righteous theology, with really no difference from Medieval Roman Catholicism.  The sad part is that even after the Reformation, Christians, even Lutheran Christians, still often lean on this worldview as the basis of their faith, as if the Reformation, or Luther had never happened.  They live as though the ideas of Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Scripture Alone were non-essentials to Christian life and practice.  Some years ago, the statistics for Protestant Christians (including Lutherans) suggested that some 50%, when asked why they would go to heaven, leaned upon their church, Bible study or Sunday School attendance, or their good works and altruism, or the usual comments; “I’ve tried to be a good person.”

Scripture is clear, all God’s blessings, (eternal life, the forgiveness of sin, access to the throne of God in Prayer, God’s continual Grace, the sustaining of Faith, the Spirit’s work through the Word of God & whatever other blessings there may be) are all gifts of God, received without any merit on our part whatsoever.  God freely gives all the gifts of heaven to all who believe on Christ’s works ALONE.  So, the question is “Do you believe,” that is, do you have faith?  If your answer is “Yes,” praise God!  If the answer is “No,” then the only thing you can do is hear God’s Word, put yourself in the way of Scripture, its preaching and its teaching.  For the Holy Spirit must open your dead heart and give your life. Ephesians. 2:8-9 “For it is by Grace you are saved, through Faith, and this not of yourselves, it is a gift of God, so that no one may boast.” And also Romans 10:17 “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of Christ.”  The same is true for we who believe, in order to maintain faith, we must hear His Word daily, partake of the Sacraments often, and simply know that God gives all that the Law demands.  You in faith are truly free, for the Son has set you free, by taking the penalty of the Law upon Himself for all your sin.

So the Lutheran (Biblical) worldview is a passive worldview.  The believer receives from Christ all that is required for faith, forgiveness, eternal life and whatever other gifts God has, without work, or merit on our part whatsoever.  This is what the Scripture means in John 8:36 “Whom the Son sets free, is free indeed.”   Or what Peter was talking about in 1 Peter 3:18 “For Christ also suffered once for sin, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.“ Notice the passivity on the part of the recipient. In John, one is set free by the Son.  In I Peter Jesus brings you to God.  It is the work of Jesus and not at all the work of the individual.  Your work can not and will not ever produce the fruit God is expecting.  But faith in Christ’s finished work will and does.  Ephesians 2:8-9 “for it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.”  Jesus has done it all, and IT IS FINISHED!  Bask in His Gracious Goodness!  Salvation is yours, Because He said so!

CRY ROOM AVAILABLE:  A cry room is available in the back of the Sanctuary for use by parents or anyone who needs it.

We provide a nursery for young children who are not always able to participate in the service with their parents.  The nursery is staffed and available for use in Classroom #5 in Friendship Hall. This ministry provides parents with a time to spend in worship and communion with fellow believers while not having to worry if their little angels are making it difficult for other worshipers. Our list of available care providers has gotten smaller for a variety of reasons. As we only want to have a couple or person serve once every 2 – 3 months, we are requesting volunteers to assist in this area. Please prayerfully consider whether you are called in this area and, if you are, please contact Darlene Oetgen or Stephanie Fuller for further information.  Thank you in advance!!

Will distribute our donations, then have lunch and return to Sierra Vista. Arrangements to be further discussed at future Crafty Ladies meetings. All confirmed members can serve; Men, women, and young adults are welcome. Married couples may serve together. The ushers serve for all the services for one month, but if you can't make all of them, we can work around it. This is a great way to serve, and it is not too difficult.

Greeters are needed. If you would like to serve as a "Greeter" for one month, pick a month on the calendar in the hall and enter your name(s).  It is nice for two people to serve each Sunday. If you have to miss a Sunday, call someone to cover for you.  Greeters are fun for our own members and a great welcoming to our visitors.

     Some Healthy Reminders:

    1. James 4:17 “If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”
    2. 1 John 3:18 “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and truth.”
    3. Psalm 7:11 “God is a righteous judge, a God who displays his wrath every day.”
    4. Psalm 4:4 “Tremble and do not sin, when you are on your beds, search you hearts and be silent.”
    5. Proverbs 15:18 “A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel.”
    6. Philippians 4:3-4 (Paul) “I entreat Evodia and I entreat Syntche to agree in the Lord, yes, I ask you also, true companion, help these women, who have labored side by side with me in the Gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life.” (For any people in conflict.)
    7. The Bible has a lot of good insight to our daily lives. We just have to read it and remember it when the going gets tough. If it was easy, anyone could do it.

    In Peace, Amen.

COMMUNION NOTE:  White grape juice is provided in the center of each tray of individual cups during communion for those who prefer a non-alcohol option.

A suggestion has been made for the formation of a Fellowship Committee to coordinate potlucks.

We are starting to collect basic school supplies for students for the 2019-20 school year. We will be coordinating with the City of Sierra Vista to hand these out to students. We are ordering bags to give to the parents to collect the supplies. In addition, these bags can also be used for grocery shopping as many people take their own bags instead of using the plastic bags. There will be a basket in the narthex for your gracious donations.

We would like to re-start the gift card giveaway for Fry’s and Safeway cards. Our next meeting will be June 3, 2019 at 3:30 p.m.

Evangelism Sponsors A “CD Ministry” …that is, they record each Sunday’s worship service.  Traveling? Sick? Working on Sundays?  If you missed a Worship Service, you may pick up a recording and listen to it at your leisure. The CD Box is in the hallway credenza.  Help yourself.

Missionaries – Carrie Smith will be visiting Sierra Vista and Immanuel June 19-24.  She will be attending service on June 23rd and will share her ministry progress in Costa Rica during Adult Bible School time.  Come join us and hear more about our ministry in Costa Rica.

    A WORD FROM PASTOR ARLO

Jesus' relationship with Peter is one of the most interesting in Scripture, in my opinion.

It seems, at first, that Peter was as close to Jesus as anyone. Yet, on the night of Jesus trial, Peter denies his Lord three times, claiming that he does not even know Him!

It's no wonder that Jesus asks Peter, at the seashore, "Do you love Me?" There is no doubt in my mind that Jesus asks Peter three times because of Peter's threefold denial.

Then, after all of this, who does the main speaking on the day of Pentecost? Peter! And, he speaks on that day as though his 'sermon' was prepared for weeks, yet, it had to be spoken on 'the spur of the moment.'

So, what do we learn from Peter's relationship with Jesus? You and I can be forgiven, when we are weak. In fact, we can, like Peter, come out stronger than ever! God can use us, no matter how weak we have been.

Let's try to stay strong in the Lord, but, if we 'fail,’ let's remember how we can be forgiven, and go on to serve Him again to serve Him. ISN’T GOD'S GRACE WONDERFUL?

    Love, in the Risen Christ,

    Pastor Emeritus, Arlo Janssen

REMINDER:   The new driveway is a two-way thoroughfare.  Please be careful and courteous when transiting the driveway.  Remember it is two lanes, one coming in and one going out.

If overflow parking is needed contact a trustee, elder, or the pastor.  Thank you for your cooperation!

Emergency equipment near the main entrance to the church now includes a defibrillator and a more extensive first aid kit. Small first aid kits are still available in the kitchen for minor injuries.

LWML the next meeting will be on June 18th off site at Ricardo’s at 6:00PM.

We are still collecting non-perishable household items for the Good Neighbor Alliance.  The items are taken to the organization on the last Sunday of each month.  There is a list of needed items on the bulletin board.

Thanks to everyone who created the wonderful gift baskets and other items for the Mother’s Day silent auction. And thanks to the very generous bidders that made it a great success. Through it we raised $435 to help support our congregational delegates attend the LWML convention!  Thanks be to God!

Share Pray and Praise is a small group that meets together on the first and third Monday of each month. Our meetings for June will be on the 3rd and 17th starting at 6:00 p.m. We invite all members of the congregation to join us. We pray for our congregation, committees, and leadership of the church. We share praises, and, if we feel led to do so, any concerns that we might have. We don’t talk about what is said in the meetings and hold confidences closely. We also don’t expect anyone to talk if they don’t feel comfortable doing so. We are seeking additional prayer warriors to join us. If you would like to come, but need transportation, please call Stephanie Fuller and we will see about getting a ride for you.

If you are interested in joining us, or want more information, please contact Stephanie Fuller
